Acting on the instructions of my Directors I beg
to draw your attention to the action of certain Chinese Soldiers stationed at Whampoa who heavily fired on Company's vessel Lungshan" as this vessel was passing up the Back
Reach to Canton yesterday at about 7 a.m.
Luckily no casualties occurred, either among the passengers or crew but the numerous marks of rifle bullets on steamer's upper works and funnel prove the firing was of a very serious nature. *
Captain G. H. Madden, the Master of s.s. "Lungshan".
reported the incident immediately after his arrival in Canton yesterday and H.B.M. Consul General has already lodged a very strong protest with the Chinese authorities.
I shall be obliged if you will bring this matter to the attention of His Excellency the Governor and request that a protest be made from here also against the enthiely unprovoked action of the soldiers at Whampoa.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
(Sd) G. E. ELLAMS.
Acting Secretary.
Hon. Mr. W. T. Southorn,
Colonial Secretary,
